100-Foot Road Cave-In Swallows Tempo on LBS Marg in Bhandup

A massive road cave-in occurred on LBS Marg in Bhandup (West) on Saturday, swallowing a parked tempo and severely disrupting traffic amid heavy monsoon rains. The incident took place at approximately 1:00 PM opposite the Asian Paints premises, where excavation work was actively underway.
The cave-in affected a nearly 100 ft x 100 ft stretch of LBS Marg, which collapsed after an under-construction retaining wall gave way. According to civic officials, a tempo parked at the site fell into the collapsed portion of the road after the surface gave way over the excavation pit. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The dramatic collapse has sparked serious concerns about road safety in the area during the heavy downpour. Following the incident, vehicular movement on the busy LBS Marg was severely affected due to the collapsed road and retaining wall.
Upon receiving information about the cave-in, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) S Ward staff rushed to the spot immediately. The civic officials barricaded the affected area and initiated emergency response measures. Traffic was diverted, and restoration work was undertaken to secure the site.
While the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be officially ascertained, civic officials said the ongoing heavy rainfall is believed to have contributed to the cave-in. Following the incident, the local administration initiated safety measures in the area to prevent further accidents.
The heavy showers have triggered wider safety concerns across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert. The intense rainfall has also caused multiple waterlogging incidents and tree-fall cases in various parts, including severe waterlogging reported in Bhiwandi city of Thane district, where a tempo and a car were stranded in floodwaters.
