100-Foot Road Caves In at Bhandup West as Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai

A massive 100 ft by 100 ft road cave-in on LBS Marg in Bhandup West and multiple tree-fall incidents across the city disrupted normal life on Sunday as heavy monsoon rains battered the region. The road collapse occurred at around 1 p.m. opposite the Asian Paints premises, where excavation work was underway, swallowing a parked tempo.

According to civic officials, no injuries or casualties were reported in the Bhandup West incident, despite the scale of the cave-in. The structural failure happened amid a heavy spell of rainfall that prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to maintain a Red Alert for Mumbai and its adjoining districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

The heavy downpour also triggered several tree-fall incidents in other parts of the city, causing traffic blockages and damaging vehicles. In Byculla West, a tree collapsed on B.J. Marg, damaging nearly six to seven parked two-wheelers. The incident temporarily disrupted vehicular movement. Fire brigade personnel and police officials rushed to the spot to launch clearance operations and remove the fallen tree. No injuries were reported there.

Another tree collapse was reported near the Swaminarayan Temple in Dadar East. The uprooted tree fell directly onto the road, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing significant inconvenience to commuters. Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel reached the spot soon after receiving the alert and initiated efforts to clear the obstruction. No injuries were reported in Dadar East.

In Mahim, another tree collapsed onto several parked two-wheelers. While this incident also resulted in no casualties, it has heightened public safety concerns among local residents and commuters as the heavy rain persists.

The IMD has forecast continued active monsoon conditions, warning of gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kmph at isolated places across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and neighbouring districts. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution due to ongoing waterlogging, flooding, and tree-fall hazards across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
