13-Year-Old Girl Killed After Balcony Collapses at Building in Mumbra

A 13-year-old girl was killed after a second-floor balcony collapsed at Faiyaz Building near Janta Bakery on Mumbra Dargah Road in Mumbra on Monday evening. The victim, identified as Aasma Kadar Sheikh, was declared dead on arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa.

The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. at the 37-year-old ground-plus-four-storey residential building. According to the Thane Municipal Corporation's Regional Disaster Management Cell, the second-floor balcony crashed onto the first-floor balcony, trapping six people beneath the debris.

The disaster management cell received a call reporting the collapse at around 7:15 p.m. Emergency teams from the fire brigade, disaster management cell, and other agencies rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operations.

Rescue workers pulled six trapped individuals from under the rubble, including Sheikh, who resided in Flat No 102 on the first floor. She suffered severe injuries and was immediately taken to the Kalwa hospital, where doctors declared her dead before admission.

Regional Disaster Management Cell In-charge Yasin Tadvi confirmed that the 37-year-old structure had been classified as a C2-category building. The property contains 30 flats, of which only 15 to 20 were occupied at the time of the collapse.

Civic authorities evacuated the entire structure as a precautionary safety measure over concerns regarding its structural stability. Approximately 70 to 80 residents were temporarily relocated to a nearby Thane Municipal Corporation school while officials assess the building's condition.

Thane Deputy Mayor Krishna Patil, Opposition Leader Shanu Pathan, and officials from the police, Thane Municipal Corporation, and the Public Works Department visited the site to inspect the damage and review the emergency response.
