2 Dead, 6 Trapped After Landslide Hits Gaushiya Chawl in Ghatkopar

At least two people were killed and around six others are feared trapped under debris after an early morning landslide struck Gaushiya Chawl in the Chirag Nagar area of Ghatkopar on Wednesday, August 12. The collapse occurred near Rathod Medical at approximately 3:00 a.m. following relentless rainfall across the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade was reported about the incident at around 3:48 a.m. Visuals from the spot showed emergency response ambulances stationed nearby as grieving locals gathered. A hill portion fell directly onto homes in the densely populated settlement, burying structures under rubble.

The deceased have been identified as 28-year-old Sahil Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Samir. Both victims were pulled from the collapse and rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead upon arrival.

Two other individuals sustained injuries in the incident and were taken to Kurla Bhabha Hospital for medical care. They have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who suffered a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari. Both injured individuals are currently reported to be in stable condition.

A major multi-agency rescue operation is currently underway at the site. Around 50 BMC labourers alongside personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working to clear the debris and locate trapped residents using specialized rescue equipment. Police personnel have also been deployed to assist emergency operations.

Civic and police officials visited the spot to oversee relief efforts, including BMC Mayor Ritu Tawde, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Avinash Dhakne, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde. DCP Shinde confirmed that the landslide occurred in the Ashoknagar area under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police, adding that four to five people are likely trapped beneath the debris.

The incident follows heavy overnight rainfall in the region. Disaster-response teams and civic officials had previously inspected landslide-prone areas and issued warnings urging residents to stay vigilant and avoid living in high-risk, vulnerable locations.
