24 of 28 Civic Works in Ghatkopar and Vikhroli Yet to Start, BMC Inspection Finds

A spot inspection conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation standing committee in N Ward, which covers Ghatkopar and Vikhroli, has revealed that 24 out of 28 civic projects inspected had not even started.

The on-site review, led by standing committee chairman Prabhakar Shinde on August 20, assessed civic works valued between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 75 lakh sanctioned under Section 69-C of the BMC Act. The inspection team found that only one project was fully completed, while three others were currently in progress.

The committee initiated the ground inspection of all 28 works after related proposals were tabled before it for consideration. During the visits across various sites in the ward, committee members observed a major gap between the official project status on paper and the actual conditions on the ground.

Among the locations inspected was the old fire brigade premises at Park Site in Vikhroli, where records had marked the assigned work as completed. However, a committee member who participated in the visit stated that very little physical work appeared to have been done aside from fresh painting, raising serious doubts regarding the official claims of completion.

The panel also inspected the ongoing protective wall construction at Sant Muktabai General Hospital in Ghatkopar (West), where work was observed to be underway.

The inspection findings are expected to be taken up for discussion during the standing committee's upcoming Thursday meeting. Members are preparing to seek formal clarity from the administration regarding how proposals for these civic works were processed and reported.
