32nd Thane Mayor's Varsha Marathon Held Near TMC Headquarters
Thousands of runners turned out in high spirits on Sunday, August 30, as the 32nd Thane Mayor’s Varsha Marathon was held near the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) headquarters, taking participants across the city under the monsoon rains.
The annual flagship sporting event, organised by the TMC, was held under the theme "Marathon of Thane, Energy of the Youth!" The marathon drew widespread participation from professional athletes, fitness enthusiasts, students, and local residents.
The races were officially flagged off early in the morning near the TMC headquarters. Key competitive race categories included the Half Marathon (21 km) and the 10 Km Run, attracting local running clubs as well as top state athletic talent. Large crowds gathered along the route across the city to cheer on runners as they navigated the rain-soaked tracks.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attended the event as the chief guest to flag off the races. Shinde also joined the participants on the track for a ceremonial run alongside local MLAs, municipal officials, and local celebrities, drawing cheers from spectators lining the streets.
Speaking to the media and addressing the gathering after completing his run, Shinde praised the spirit of Thanekars and highlighted the city's sports culture. He noted that the marathon reflects the true energy, resilience, and spirit of the youth, adding that running alongside citizens in the rain delivers a message of a dynamic city that continues to move forward.
Shinde also stated that the state government is fully committed to upgrading sports infrastructure across Maharashtra to ensure young athletes receive world-class facilities locally. He remarked that sports foster sportsmanship, reflecting the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Khelo India movement.
The event concluded with a formal award ceremony where category winners were honoured with cash prizes and trophies. TMC officials expressed gratitude to traffic authorities, medical personnel, and volunteers who worked to ensure the safe and seamless conduct of the event.
