38 Rescued After Excursion Ferry Breaks Down Off Gateway of India in Mumbai

Police and a local boat operator rescued 38 people after a ferry suffered an engine breakdown off the Gateway of India in Mumbai on Thursday night, an official said.

The incident took place around 8:30 pm aboard the excursion boat named 'Anwari', which operates half-hour trips at sea. The vessel was on its return journey to the Gateway of India when it suffered a mid-sea engine failure approximately 1.5 nautical miles off the coast.

The disabled vessel was carrying a total of 34 passengers and four crew members at the time of the breakdown, leaving them stranded in the water.

Upon receiving an alert regarding the emergency from the police control room, Constable Abhijit Shinde and other personnel initiated an inquiry to identify any other boats operating in the vicinity of the stranded vessel.

The officers learned that another excursion boat, named 'Azad Hind', was present near the site of the incident. The police team quickly contacted its owner, Junaid Mulla, and requested his immediate help in assisting the stranded boat.

The 'Azad Hind' reached the location and managed to tow the 'Anwari' safely back to Jetty no. 2 at the Gateway of India by around 9:30 pm.

All 34 passengers and the four crew members aboard were brought ashore safely without sustaining any injuries, according to an official.
