6 Dead, 4 Injured in Rain-Triggered Landslide at Chirag Nagar in Kurla
Six people were killed and four others were injured after a rainfall-triggered landslide struck residential sheds at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Kurla, in the early hours of Wednesday. The disaster occurred at around 3:48 am near Rathod Medical, trapping residents under the debris of affected structures.
Following the incident, a large-scale rescue operation was launched at the spot. Rescue teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and 108 ambulance service were rushed to Chirag Nagar to search for trapped residents and clear the rubble.
Information provided by Kurla Bhabha Hospital and Rajawadi Hospital confirmed a total of 10 casualties. Six people were declared brought dead at Rajawadi Hospital: Aban Arif Shaikh (2), Manat Arif Shaikh (4), Mohammad Samir Ansari (14), Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi (19), Marjina Arif Shaikh (27), and an unidentified 45-year-old person.
Four injured individuals were rescued and admitted to Kurla Bhabha Hospital. The injured were identified as Mohammad Ansari (14), Sajid Ansari (16), Sohel Ansari (18), and Naimuddhin Eqbal Khan (28). Hospital officials confirmed that all four patients were in stable condition.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site following the tragedy to meet affected families and inspect relief work. As per an official BMC release, Mayor Tawde announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each deceased victim, while each injured person will receive Rs 50,000.
DCP Ganesh Shinde confirmed that heavy rainfall triggered the landslide. Police personnel were deployed alongside NDRF and civic workers to manage the site. Mayor Tawde instructed participating agencies to speed up relief operations and maintain effective coordination. Senior civic officials who visited the site to supervise operations included Additional Municipal Commissioner (East Suburbs) Dr Avinash Dhakane and L Ward Assistant Commissioner (in-charge) Anil Jadhav. Emergency operations continued through the morning as personnel cleared debris to determine the overall damage.
