6 Dead in Kurla Landslide; Sachin Ahir Inspects Site, Announces Rs 4 Lakh Aid

Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Sachin Ahir on Wednesday visited the site of a major landslide near Gaushia Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Kurla, where six people lost their lives. Ahir inspected the location while emergency rescue operations were still actively underway, taking stock of the situation and evaluating immediate relief efforts.

Describing the tragedy as "extremely unfortunate and painful," Ahir assured that the government and local administration are standing firmly with the affected families. He stated that immediate relief measures had already been initiated following the disaster.

While Ahir was present at the site, rescue personnel managed to pull one person out alive from beneath the accumulated debris. However, emergency workers feared that two more people remained trapped under the rubble as search efforts continued.

Ahir commended the local authorities for their swift intervention, noting that the local corporator, fire brigade personnel, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation teams reached the spot and launched rescue operations immediately after receiving information about the incident. He praised the Fire Brigade personnel for their dedicated efforts despite facing significant difficulties during the rescue operation, while also appreciating the prompt response of the civic administration.

Regarding financial relief, Ahir informed that the administration has been directed to deposit monetary assistance of Rs 4 lakh directly into the bank accounts of each victim's family. Furthermore, he committed to pursuing additional financial support for the affected families from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

Addressing long-term solutions, Ahir emphasized the necessity of relocating residents from hazard-prone areas. "Having a safe home is the right of every citizen in Mumbai. Therefore, permanent rehabilitation of residents in this area is necessary," he said.

Ahir announced that he would hold detailed discussions with the state Deputy Chief Minister regarding the rehabilitation of local residents. He pledged to press for restarting the stalled Shivshahi Rehabilitation Project to address long-pending rehabilitation issues in the area. Ahir stressed that preventive measures must be taken against future landslides and that the need of the hour is to ensure resident safety by shifting affected people to safe locations and providing them with permanent rehabilitation at the earliest.
