6 Dead, Several Trapped After Landslide Hits Kurla West Chawl
Six people have died, five were injured, and at least six others remain trapped after a landslide hit Gaushiya Chawl in the Chirag Nagar locality of Kurla West, in Mumbai’s eastern suburb, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The landslide occurred around 3:48 a.m. near Rathod Medical. Debris fell directly onto nearby rooms of the chawl structure. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officially classified the disaster as a Level II incident.
Two of the deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari. Both victims were taken to Rajawadi Hospital following the collapse. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad brought dead upon arrival. Sohel sustained head injuries.
A BMC official stated that witness reports indicated six to eight persons were trapped under the debris immediately after the landslide. Official emergency figures confirm that at least six people are currently reported trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue operations are actively underway at the site in Kurla West. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 50 BMC personnel are present on the ground conducting search and rescue efforts to clear the fallen debris.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Mayor Ritu Tawade reached the location in Chirag Nagar on Wednesday morning to inspect the scene and monitor the ongoing emergency operations.
