65-Year-Old Auto Driver Dies After Assault in Bhiwandi's Samadnagar
A 65-year-old autorickshaw driver died after being allegedly assaulted by a group of youths in Samadnagar on Thane Road in Bhiwandi, police said. The victim, identified as Jameel Ahmed Momin, a resident of the Samadnagar area, was attacked after he confronted the group for allegedly passing inappropriate comments at passers-by.
According to available information, Momin was travelling through Samadnagar when he spotted a group of youths standing alongside the road. The youths were allegedly passing comments at people travelling through the area. Momin reportedly stopped, approached the group, and questioned them regarding their conduct.
The confrontation began as a verbal argument between Momin and the youths, but it soon escalated into a physical altercation. Police said that Momin was allegedly assaulted by some members of the group, which left the elderly autorickshaw driver seriously injured at the scene.
Following the assault, Momin was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. However, despite medical intervention and efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Following the incident, the Bhiwandi City Police reached the spot and initiated a formal probe into the death of the elderly driver. Police personnel sent the deceased's body to the IGM Sub-District Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
As part of the ongoing probe, police have detained two suspects in connection with the fatal altercation. Investigators are actively examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to determine the precise sequence of events and identify the specific roles played by everyone involved in the assault. A CCTV video purportedly showing the incident has also surfaced on social media platforms and is being widely circulated.
The fatal assault has sparked safety concerns among local residents in Samadnagar, particularly over the fact that the elderly driver was attacked after questioning youths over their alleged roadside behaviour towards passers-by. Bhiwandi police stated that further investigation is continuing and more details are awaited.
