75-Year-Old Woman Duped of Rs 4.07 Lakh in Wagle Estate Cyber Fraud

A 75-year-old woman was duped of Rs 4.07 lakh by a cyber fraudster posing as a bank official in the Wagle Estate area of Thane. The incident came to light after the victim lodged a complaint at the Wagle Estate Police Station.

According to the city police, the scam began on June 20 when the victim received a phone call from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be a bank employee inquiring about pension card facilities. During the call, the fraudster persuaded the woman to contact a second telephone number to obtain details regarding the service.

When the woman placed a call to the second number, she was sent a link to a webpage and instructed to enter details regarding her State Bank of India accounts. She was induced to input sensitive account information on the site, including her CIF number and IFSC code.

Shortly after submitting the details, multiple unauthorized online transactions took place. A total of Rs 4,07,163 was transferred out of her State Bank of India account without her consent.

After realizing she had been scammed, the woman reported the fraudulent transactions to the local authorities at the Wagle Estate Police Station. Inspector Maruti Kadam is heading the investigation into the cyber crime.
