85-Year-Old Chembur Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run at APMC Market in Navi Mumbai

An 85-year-old woman from Chembur was killed after being struck by an unidentified vehicle in a hit-and-run accident near Gate No. 5 of the vegetable market at the APMC Market in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday morning.
The victim has been identified by the police as Mumtaz Shahabuddin Sayyed, a resident of the Lal Dongar area in Chembur. Sayyed, who earned her livelihood by selling fruits, had travelled to the APMC Market to purchase fruits and other business supplies when the tragic incident occurred.
According to the APMC Police, the accident took place while Sayyed was attempting to cross the road near Gate No. 5 of the vegetable market. An unidentified vehicle, which was reportedly being driven at a high speed and in a rash and negligent manner, knocked her down on the street.
The elderly woman suffered severe injuries to both of her legs as well as other parts of her body due to the impact of the collision. Passersby and onlookers rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries during the course of her treatment.
Following the collision, the driver of the vehicle fled the spot immediately. The driver did not stop to offer any medical assistance to the injured woman, nor did they inform the local police about the accident.
The APMC Police have registered a case against the unidentified motorist under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additionally, charges have been filed under Sections 134(a) and 134(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
"We have registered a case against the unidentified driver and are examining CCTV footage from the market area to identify the vehicle," a police officer from the APMC Police Station stated. "Multiple teams are working to trace the accused, and appropriate legal action will be taken once he is apprehended."
The ongoing investigation is being conducted under the direct supervision of Senior Police Inspector Abasaheb Patil as officers continue their search to locate the vehicle and apprehend the fleeing driver.
