Aaditya Thackeray and Waris Pathan Condemn Alleged Police Action on Delhi Protesters
Several Mumbai-based political representatives have strongly condemned an alleged Delhi Police crackdown and lathi-charge on peaceful protesters at Jantar Mantar on Monday morning. The incident, which reportedly involved the use of baton charges and tear gas against protesting students, has sparked a major political backlash, with local leaders accusing the government of suppressing democratic protests.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray criticized the police action on his X account, questioning how a democratic nation that follows a constitution, the rule of law, and free and fair elections could order a brutal crackdown on peaceful protests. Thackeray expressed concern over the global perception of the country's current regime following the incident.
In his social media posts, Thackeray called the regime cowardly and argued that it has transformed into a dictatorship. He criticized the government for refusing to acknowledge systemic failures in education and for failing to ask a minister to interact with young Indians. Thackeray asserted that democracy in the nation has been captured by the ruling regime and is no longer functioning as intended.
To support his point, Thackeray recalled the Anna Hazare movement during the previous Congress-led government. He noted that during those protests, ministers were deployed to hold talks with the protesters, an approach he stated is completely missing in the current situation.
Additionally, AIMIM National Spokesperson Waris Pathan expressed his concerns regarding the developments at Jantar Mantar. Pathan stated that the movement should not be viewed from a political or religious perspective. He pointed out that scientist Sonam Wangchuk, who has dedicated significant efforts towards education and received several awards, had been on a hunger strike at the Delhi protest site for nearly 20 days.
Pathan further highlighted that reports were emerging on Monday indicating that students at the protest site were subjected to baton charges and that tear gas was used against them.
