Amazon commits 8.3 billion dollars to Maharashtra as CM meets CEO Andy Jassy

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met with Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in Mumbai on Wednesday to discuss the company's $8.3 billion digital partnership with the state. The meeting highlighted the progress of projects under a memorandum of understanding with Amazon Web Services (AWS) signed at Davos in 2025, which are expected to generate 83,100 jobs across India, alongside ecological initiatives around Thane creek.

During the meeting, which took place on the first day of Jassy's India visit, Fadnavis described Maharashtra as India’s technology capital and praised Amazon as an integral partner in the state’s digital transformation. The $8.3 billion commitment represents Amazon’s largest single-state investment in India.

The partnership features significant local environmental and economic impacts. Fadnavis highlighted that Thane, Mumbai, Pune, and Kolhapur rank among the top 50 exporting cities in India on Amazon's platform.

Additionally, Amazon is investing $1.2 million to restore flamingo habitats around Thane creek. The company has also committed ₹10 crore to the Vaitarna hydrobasin to replenish 1.3 billion litres of water annually, benefiting 700 local farmers, and plans to plant 300,000 trees in the Western Ghats.

Fadnavis noted that the state is actively expanding facilities to develop data centers under its dedicated data center policy, which includes provisions for green data centers. Maharashtra was also the first Indian state to implement a public cloud policy in collaboration with Amazon.

The Chief Minister thanked Jassy for choosing Mumbai to establish Amazon's first cloud infrastructure in India in June 2016. Since then, the partnership has expanded to include six fulfilment centres and more than 200 delivery stations across the state.

Looking forward, Fadnavis urged Amazon to collaborate with the government on artificial intelligence-based skill development programs, particularly for the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. He also invited Amazon to invest in the proposed MedCity project in Navi Mumbai, which aims to create a comprehensive healthcare treatment ecosystem in a single location.
