Andheri East Football Fans Host House Parties For Late-Night World Cup Final

With local restaurants and pubs closing before the late-night kickoff, football fans in Andheri East and across Mumbai transformed their homes and offices into private screening zones to watch the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday night. The match, which started close to midnight and lasted past 3:00 AM, prompted residents to upgrade their home entertainment systems and host house parties to recreate stadium energy at home.

In Andheri East, educator Tanukripa Pal hosted a house party to bring the stadium atmosphere directly into her drawing room. Pal and her friends planned to wear their favorite team colors to channel the carnival energy, noise, and nervousness of the live event.

The shift to home-based viewing came as a necessity for many Mumbaikars. Because the summit clash kicked off near midnight, standard commercial venues like sports bars and rooftop screenings shut down well before the game commenced.

Other residents across the city made similar arrangements. In Vikhroli, finance professional Mithun Dasgupta upgraded his home entertainment system with a massive new television to watch the match with his son and visiting friends.

For some, the viewing moved to the workplace. Media professional Ashish Patil, who lives in Santacruz but works late shifts in South Mumbai, watched the tournament's final matches, including the Sunday finale, on office televisions with his colleagues after realizing he could not travel home in time.

The final also sparked friendly local rivalries over the teams. Bandra entrepreneur Rohan Mehta hosted a watch party supporting Argentina, hoping to see Lionel Messi win his final World Cup, while his friends rooted for Spain and Lamine Yamal. Meanwhile, art director Suman Chakraborty joined friends to support Spain, highlighting the collective joy of watching the game together.

The late-night festivities began 90 minutes before kickoff with FIFA's closing ceremony, which featured appearances by Tom Cruise, Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Hudson, Laura Pausini, and Post Malone. The final also featured a Super Bowl-style halftime show curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin, with performances by Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira, BTS, Burna Boy, Gustavo Dudamel, and the PS22 Chorus.
