Andheri Metro Station Features Vibrant Pookalam Ahead of Thiru Onam

Andheri Metro Station transformed into a cultural hub on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as the local Malayali community set up a vibrant Pookalam to celebrate the harvest festival of Onam.

The floral installation was placed inside the station ahead of Thiru Onam, the tenth and final day of the festival. Tuesday marked Uthradam, the ninth day of the celebrations, which is traditionally dedicated to final preparations before the main festivities.

Created by the Malayalis Samaj, the intricate floral carpet was assembled using fresh flowers and surrounded by traditional brass oil lamps, known as nilavilakku. The installation was organised to provide thousands of daily commuters and visitors with an opportunity to experience Kerala's cultural traditions, particularly for community members living away from their home state.

Andheri Metro Station is among the busiest transit hubs in Mumbai, witnessing a footfall of more than one lakh commuters every day.

A Pookalam is an essential element of the ten-day Onam festival, symbolising Kerala's heritage, community harmony, and festive spirit. On Uthradam, families traditionally decorate their homes, purchase new clothing, and prepare delicacies ahead of the grand feast on Thiru Onam.
