Andheri Subway Closed Temporarily After Heavy Rain Lashes Mumbai on Wednesday

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Mumbai on Wednesday morning, leading to significant waterlogging and disrupting the daily commute for residents. The intense downpour resulted in the temporary closure of the Andheri subway, a critical traffic junction in the western suburbs of the city.

The Andheri subway was officially closed to vehicular traffic at 7:40 a.m. due to rapid water accumulation inside the underpass. This closure caused immediate disruptions for motorists and local commuters navigating the area. Municipal authorities monitored the situation as the water accumulated, and the subway was successfully reopened to traffic at 8:24 a.m. after the water level receded.

Data collected between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. highlighted the uneven distribution of the rainfall across Mumbai. The island city recorded a minimal 0.96mm of rainfall, while the eastern suburbs registered 1.25mm of rainfall. The western suburbs experienced the heaviest precipitation, recording an average of 9.84mm during the one-hour window.

Within the western suburbs, several neighborhoods recorded particularly high rainfall figures. Versova recorded the highest localized rainfall with 69mm of precipitation. Vile Parle recorded rainfall measurements of 52mm and 33mm. Other heavily affected areas included Andheri East, which recorded 49mm of rain, and Andheri West, which recorded 46mm of rain. Santacruz recorded 30mm of rainfall during the same period.

In the eastern suburbs, Chembur recorded a total of 12mm of rainfall between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The localized heavy downpour in the western suburbs, particularly in the Andheri and Versova areas, was the primary driver of the waterlogging that temporarily shut down the subway. The quick reopening of the underpass within 44 minutes helped ease the traffic flow and minimized further disruption to the morning transit for local commuters.

The rain affected various parts of the city differently, with the western suburbs receiving the vast majority of the morning's precipitation, while the island city and eastern suburbs experienced much lighter showers during the same hour.
