Bandra 360 MLD sewage treatment plant targeted for July 2027 completion

Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has directed contractors to strictly adhere to construction timelines and quality standards for seven ongoing sewage treatment plant (STP) projects across Mumbai, including the 360 MLD facility in Bandra. During a progress review on Saturday, Bhide instructed officials and contractors to fast-track the work to improve the quality of wastewater discharged into the sea. The Bandra STP is currently targeted for completion by July 2027.

The city-wide upgradation initiative covers seven STPs located at Worli, Bandra, Malad, Ghatkopar, Dharavi, Bhandup, and Versova. Stalled for nearly two decades, the ambitious project was finally awarded in May 2022 at a total cost of Rs 27,309.83 crore. Once fully operational, these plants will offer a combined treatment capacity of 2,464 MLD of sewage per day. When combined with the existing 37 MLD Colaba STP, Mumbai’s total sewage treatment capacity will rise to 2,501 MLD.

Bhide's directives followed her site inspection of the 454 MLD Malad STP on Saturday. The Malad project, which has faced delays due to lengthy land acquisition processes and environmental clearances, is now on track for completion by July 2028. It features a six-year construction period followed by 15 years of operation and maintenance.

Currently, the existing Malad facility only performs primary treatment before discharging sewage into the local creek. The upgraded Malad plant will utilize Sequential Batch Reactor technology to provide secondary treatment to 454 MLD of sewage daily, with 227 MLD undergoing additional tertiary treatment. The site will also include Class A sludge treatment and generate electricity using biogas produced during the process.

The municipal corporation expects these upgrades to significantly improve coastal water quality and marine ecology. While the Bandra, Worli, and Dharavi plants are scheduled for completion by July 2027, other sites have different timelines. The Ghatkopar and Versova STPs are targeted for July 2026, followed by the Bhandup plant in August 2026. The completion of these projects is expected to benefit residents across several suburbs, including Dahisar, Borivli, Kandivli, Malad, and Goregaon.
