Bandra Footballers Protest BMC Plan to Convert Neville D'Souza Ground

Members of the Mumbai football fraternity, including players, coaches, parents, and local residents, gathered at the Neville D'Souza ground in Bandra West on Sunday to protest a municipal proposal that threatens the future of the local sporting venue. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to convert the popular football ground into a convention centre.
The protest was organized in response to the BMC's plan, which local sports enthusiasts and officials say will severely impact the city's sports landscape. The Neville D'Souza ground is a critical venue for the Mumbai Football Association (MFA), which uses the space to host tournaments throughout the year.
According to protesters, converting the ground into a convention centre would deprive thousands of footballers from 300 local clubs of a crucial, year-round playing facility. The venue regularly hosts matches for players across various age groups, serving as a primary hub for soccer in the region.
The dispute over the ground's future intensified after the lease for the Neville D'Souza ground expired a few months ago. Following the expiration of the lease, the government decided to step in and change the designated purpose of the land from a sports ground to a convention centre.
During the demonstration on Sunday, football lovers of all ages assembled at the Bandra West venue to voice their opposition. Protesters raised appeals to senior government leadership, using slogans such as "Mr PM, Mr CM, please help us save our ground" to draw attention to their cause.
Representatives from the MFA and the broader football community emphasized that the loss of the Neville D'Souza ground would leave a significant void for the 300 clubs that rely on the facility for regular competitive play and training. The fraternity is urging authorities to reconsider the decision and preserve the ground for sports.
