Bandra West Records 70 mm of Rain as Heavy Downpour Hits Mumbai

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds lashed parts of Mumbai, including Bandra West and the Eastern Express Highway, on Monday morning. The sudden downpour brought immediate relief to local residents following weeks of a prolonged dry spell and humid weather conditions.

The early morning rainfall was concentrated primarily over south Mumbai and parts of the western suburbs. The precipitation marked a significant shift in the weather, indicating that the official onset of the monsoon season is likely imminent.

According to meteorological data, the island city received an average rainfall of 17 mm between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. During the same one-hour window, the western suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 10 mm.

Among the specific areas affected, Bandra West recorded the highest rainfall at 70 mm. Several other neighborhoods also witnessed substantial downpours during the early morning hours. In south Mumbai, Worli Naka received 61 mm of rain, followed closely by Lower Parel which recorded 58 mm. Other areas that experienced significant rainfall included Malabar Hill with 44 mm and Worli with 42 mm.

Visuals captured from Bandra East and along the Eastern Express Highway showed heavy rain lashing the city under heavily overcast skies. In addition to the heavy showers, the city and its adjoining areas also witnessed active thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting more thunderstorms, lightning, rain, and gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph at isolated places across Mumbai over the next three days.

The IMD stated that the monsoon is expected to advance over Mumbai shortly. Officials are set to make an official announcement regarding the arrival of the monsoon once all the necessary meteorological parameters for its onset are fully met.
