Bhiwandi building wall collapse damages local utility pipelines

A security wall of an under-construction building collapsed in the Prabhu Ali area of Bhiwandi, Thane, late Sunday night, damaging critical local utility pipelines. The incident occurred at approximately 12:00 AM due to heavy monsoon rains that have lashed the region. No injuries or casualties were reported from the site, though the collapse has forced an immediate halt to the building's construction.

The sudden collapse occurred when local residents were asleep. According to a resident living near the site, a loud sound woke people up at around midnight, prompting them to step outside to investigate the noise. Upon exiting their homes, residents discovered that the entire security wall of the under-construction building had collapsed, scattering bricks all over the construction site.

The impact of the collapse was severe enough to damage the sewage and water pipelines that serve the residents living in the immediate vicinity of the under-construction building. Because of the damage to these utilities and the structure itself, all construction work at the site has been suspended for the time being.

The incident took place amidst heavy monsoon showers that have caused widespread disruption across Bhiwandi. The heavy rain led to severe waterlogging on several roads and lanes throughout the area, which heavily disrupted local vehicular traffic. The downpour and subsequent flooding also severely affected local markets and shopkeepers.

Beyond Bhiwandi, the heavy rainfall was felt across the wider region. Over the same night, moderate to heavy showers were recorded in several other parts of Mumbai and its suburbs, including Marine Lines, Prabhadevi, Byculla, Lalbaug, Andheri, Malad, Jogeshwari, Mulund, Kanjurmarg, and Kurla, causing waterlogging in multiple locations.

In light of the ongoing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert warning of light to moderate rainfall across both Thane and Mumbai. The weather warning remains in place from June 29 through July 2.
