Bihar laborer Sumit Kumar Mandal drowns in rain-filled pit in Vasai East

A 20-year-old migrant laborer drowned after falling into a deep, rain-filled pit at the under-construction Vasai East Suraksha Smart City Complex in Madhuban, Maharashtra. The incident occurred during active work hours when the victim fell into the water-filled excavation, which had been dug for the construction of a high-tension power tower.

The deceased laborer has been identified as Sumit Kumar Suresh Mandal, a native of the Bhagalpur district in Bihar. Mandal had been employed at the Madhuban site by the company tasked with overseeing the power tower construction.

According to his brother, Ritesh Mandal, the fatal accident took place during regular work hours. The deep excavation, dug to erect the high-tension tower, had accumulated a significant volume of water due to heavy monsoon rainfall.

Following the fall, a recovery operation was initiated in the murky water of the pit. Visuals from the under-construction township site showed a crowd of local onlookers gathering around the edge of the deep excavation as the operation got underway. The footage also depicted the scale of the pit and the makeshift, unbarricaded conditions under which the hazardous site had been left standing amidst the heavy monsoon downpour.

The Vasai police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mandal's death. A key focus of the police inquiry is to determine whether there was safety negligence on the part of the construction company, specifically regarding a lack of adequate safety barricades or warning signage around the deep pit.

Mandal's death has sparked renewed criticism of civic and construction site negligence during the monsoon season. The incident highlights a recurring pattern of safety hazards, such as open pits, uncovered drains, and unsecured work areas left without proper barricades or warning systems, which pose severe risks to both workers and residents.
