Biker Arrested for Assaulting Crime Branch Cops Near Durgamata Chowk in Kalyan

A 44-year-old motorcyclist was arrested early on Friday morning near Durgamata Chowk in Kalyan East after allegedly abusing, threatening, and assaulting two Kalyan Crime Branch Unit-3 officers who were waiting for a towing van.

The incident took place while the Crime Branch team was transporting a seized Eicher tempo, bearing registration number KA 02 AM 5881, to its office. The tempo reportedly developed a mechanical problem near Durgamata Chowk, forcing the police personnel to park by the roadside and call for a towing van to clear the vehicle.

While the officers were waiting by the roadside, Ramesh Bhairav Barje, a resident of Shivnagar in Sapadgaon, Kalyan West, arrived at the scene riding a motorcycle bearing registration number MH 05 EC 1243. The two-wheeler reportedly displayed a traffic police logo. Police said Barje approached the officers and questioned them, asking them to arrange a towing van.

When the team informed him that a towing van had already been summoned and requested him to move his motorcycle, Barje allegedly became aggressive and began hurling abuse at the personnel. According to the complaint, he grabbed the collars of Assistant Police Inspector Ganesh Dalvi and Police Constable Vijay Jire and engaged in a physical scuffle with them. One of the officers reportedly suffered an internal chest injury during the altercation.

Police said the accused appeared to be intoxicated and emitted a strong smell of alcohol. Barje then allegedly stood directly in front of the towing van in an attempt to block the seized tempo from being moved. He also issued threats to the officers, warning them that he would summon his associates to the spot to confront them.

Crime Branch personnel alerted the Bazarpeth police, who arrived at the scene shortly after and took Barje into custody. Based on a complaint lodged by Constable Vijay Jire, the Bazarpeth police registered a case against Barje under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for assaulting on-duty personnel and obstructing government servants from discharging their official duties.

The investigation has been assigned to Police Sub-Inspector Amol Kisan Andhale. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the altercation and the alleged obstruction of the Crime Branch officers during the operation.
