BJP Corporator Demands AI and Satellite Survey of Mumbai Water Bodies

BJP Corporator and Mumbai BJP Secretary CA Pratik Karpe has urged the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) through a formal Notice of Motion to undertake a comprehensive survey of all traditional water sources across the city using artificial intelligence and satellite technology. The proposal aims to preserve and rejuvenate wells, lakes, and natural springs across the BMC area to combat growing threats from global warming and climate change.

To address potential water scarcity driven by rapid urbanisation and declining groundwater levels, Karpe proposed mapping accurate GPS coordinates for every local water source. He recommended creating a GIS-based Digital Water Map to consolidate data on all wells, lakes, and other water bodies onto a single platform.

The Notice of Motion also calls for the development of a Smart Water Monitoring Dashboard equipped with IoT sensors to enable continuous 24x7 monitoring of water levels and water quality. Furthermore, Karpe suggested establishing a deliberative study group involving key institutions and stakeholders, including ISRO, IMD, INCOIS, IIT Mumbai, and climate advocacy groups, to create a comprehensive action plan for Mumbai's water rejuvenation.

Highlighting international practices, Karpe noted that lessons could be drawn from Tokyo's water harvesting infrastructure following consultations with stakeholders. He also emphasized that certain wells with heritage value should be recharged to maintain sustained use for future generations.

Karpe stated that adopting these advanced technologies would facilitate the planned utilization of non-potable water, promote groundwater recharge, and secure local water reserves during periods of extreme weather and global warming challenges. He has urged the Municipal Commissioner to formulate a comprehensive policy on the proposal and submit a detailed report at the earliest.
