BJP Leader's Son Booked After Car Crash Kills Carpenter in Ulhasnagar

A 51-year-old carpenter was killed and his son was injured on Monday after their scooter was hit by an electric car driven by the son of a prominent BJP leader near Birla Gate in Shahad, Ulhasnagar. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:00 PM.

The deceased has been identified as Devendrasingh Rajput, a resident of Mharal village in Kalyan. Rajput worked as a carpenter in the Ulhasnagar furniture market. On the afternoon of the incident, Rajput had set off for Shahad on his scooter, carrying his son as a pillion rider.

As they travelled near Birla Gate, their scooter was struck by an electric car driven by 40-year-old Avinash Mutha. Avinash Mutha is the son of Prakash Mutha, a prominent Kalyan builder, jeweller, and local BJP leader. Avinash Mutha was reportedly returning home at the time of the collision.

The force of the impact threw Rajput onto the road, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately rushed to Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar for medical attention. Rajput ultimately died from his injuries during treatment. His son sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Following the collision, Avinash Mutha fled the spot. He later surrendered before the Kalyan police, citing fears of facing mob fury.

The Ulhasnagar police have registered an First Information Report (FIR) against Avinash Mutha. Officers have also seized his electric vehicle and issued a notice to him as per the law.

"The exact circumstances that led to the accident are being ascertained," said Santosh Awhad, senior Ulhasnagar police inspector.

Prakash Mutha, the father of the accused, is a well-known local political figure. Prior to joining the BJP, he was associated with the Congress party. He also unsuccessfully contested the 2019 assembly elections as an independent candidate.
