BMC Approves New Tech-Driven Cleanliness Scheme for Mumbai Slums

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has granted in-principle approval to a new technology-driven sanitation programme aimed at transforming cleanliness across Mumbai's slums, congested localities, and densely populated settlements. The proposal for the 'Brihanmumbai Cleanliness Service Scheme' was presented and approved during a meeting of civic group leaders chaired by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Tuesday evening at the BMC headquarters.

The newly approved initiative is designed to replace a 13-year-old cleanliness programme that officials noted has struggled to keep pace with the city's growing demands. To modernize waste management and civic monitoring in informal settlements, the BMC plans to introduce tech-enabled measures, including GPS tracking and a QR-code-based complaint system.

Civic officials present at the Tuesday meeting stated that the new scheme is expected to serve as a turning point for sanitation in the city's most crowded neighbourhoods.

The decision followed discussions among a broad cross-section of Mumbai's political and administrative leadership. In addition to Mayor Ritu Tawde, the meeting at the BMC headquarters was attended by Leader of the House Ganesh Khankar, Leader of Opposition Kishoritai Pednekar, and Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide.

Group leaders from various political parties, including the Shiv Sena, Congress, Samajwadi Party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), were present alongside senior municipal officials to evaluate and back the proposed scheme.
