BMC Assures Bombay HC It Will Not Park Garbage Vans Near Heritage Sites in Fort

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured the Bombay High Court that garbage transport vehicles will not be parked near heritage landmarks in the Fort area in the future.
A bench led by Justice Girish Kulkarni recorded the civic body's compliance during a hearing on Wednesday regarding petitions related to the Kanjurmarg dumping ground. The court emphasised that "positive steps" must be taken to improve health and hygiene across the area.
The court's earlier orders had explicitly prohibited the collection of garbage and the parking of waste vehicles near prominent heritage sites in South Mumbai. These locations include the Bombay High Court, Mumbai University, the City Civil Court, and the stretch running parallel to the Oval Maidan.
In an affidavit submitted to the court, the BMC stated that it had issued show-cause notices to senior officers within its solid waste management department over the issue. The civic administration also informed the bench that a nodal officer has been appointed to oversee and monitor compliance on the ground.
The BMC gave a formal undertaking to strictly comply with the High Court's directions moving forward. Accepting the undertaking, the bench directed the civic body to exercise "all care and caution" to ensure ongoing adherence to the orders.
