BMC Cleans Marine Litter From Culvem Beach In Gorai After Residents Alert On WhatsApp

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a beach clean-up drive at Culvem beach in Gorai, Mumbai, on Friday to clear a large accumulation of marine litter. The waste had washed onto the rocky shoreline due to recent monsoon rains and high tides.
The cleanup initiative was set in motion after local residents from the Gorai Gaothan Panchayat flagged the issue on a WhatsApp group. This digital communication channel connects local residents, civic officials, and elected representatives, allowing for direct and rapid communication between citizens and the municipality.
Upon receiving the alert, civic workers were deployed to the rocky shoreline of Culvem beach to clear the marine debris. The cleanup drive was carried out with the active support of a local corporator, who helped facilitate the coordination between the residents and the civic body.
The monsoon season and accompanying high tides had recently deposited significant amounts of marine debris along the Gorai coast. The heavy accumulation of litter on the rocky shoreline prompted the Gorai Gaothan Panchayat to raise the issue, seeking immediate action to restore the beach.
The successful mobilization of BMC resources highlighted the role of citizen-civic communication via mobile messaging platforms. By using the WhatsApp group to alert the authorities, the residents of Gorai were able to prompt swift civic action to address the environmental impact of the monsoon tides on their local shoreline.
