BMC Completes Pipeline Repair at Teen Hath Naka in Thane, Restoring Water Supply

Municipal engineers have completed emergency repair work on the 3,000 mm diameter Mumbai-III main trunk pipeline near Teen Hath Naka in Thane, allowing the phased restoration of water supply across Mumbai and its eastern suburbs starting at 9:00 PM on Saturday.

Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Outside City Water Works Department confirmed that the trunk line was successfully recharged following the stabilization of the damaged section on Saturday evening, bringing relief to residents impacted by a multi-day disruption.

The leak on the major water conduit was initially detected on the night of Thursday, August 13. Municipal crews first contained the high-pressure breach using a temporary wooden stopper. To carry out permanent repairs, workers excavated the ground surrounding the pipeline and pumped out pooled water to dry the site. The engineering plan called for welding a mild steel patch plate directly over the ruptured section of the steel pipe.

However, repair operations faced a setback when high internal water pressure triggered a second breach during the intervention. The sudden surge in pressure created engineering challenges and led to widespread water shortages across multiple municipal zones in Mumbai and the eastern suburbs.

To address the issue safely, engineers coordinated directly with teams at the Pise Pumping Station and the Panjrapur Water Treatment Plant to regulate water flow rates and depressurize the affected section of the supply network. Technical personnel carried out permanent welding repairs on a war footing, stabilizing the trunk main by 5:00 PM on Saturday, August 15.

Following the successful completion of the welding and testing procedures, civic authorities safely recharged the pipeline and began restoring normal water distribution across the affected zones in phased stages.
