BMC Demands Rs 22 Crore From Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Colaba

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a Rs 22 crore notice to the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Colaba, Mumbai, for installing security bollards and barricades on civic footpaths and roads. Following the receipt of the notice, the hotel management has formally requested a waiver of the charges, citing security reasons. A final decision on whether to grant the concession is expected to be made next week.

The barricades and bollards were originally laid around the periphery of the luxury hotel in Colaba following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. They were erected to obstruct direct access to the hotel premises and tighten security around the landmark property.

However, BMC regulations mandate the imposition of fees for erecting such barricades on public roads and footpaths. Because these security structures have been in place since 2008, the outstanding dues have steadily accumulated to the current total of Rs 22 crore.

According to civic officials, while the Taj Mahal Palace hotel has deposited some amount toward these charges, a major portion of the total accumulated fees is yet to be cleared. An official confirmed that a large amount of the charges, which accumulated over several years, remains outstanding.

In response to the Rs 22 crore notice, hotel representatives have argued that the bollards were constructed strictly from a safety and security point of view. Based on this, they have sought a concession in the outstanding fees.

A senior official from the BMC's A ward confirmed that discussions are currently underway between the civic body and the hotel management. The official stated that a final decision pertaining to the waiver subject will be taken in the next week.

The issue of granting a waiver to the Taj Mahal Palace hotel has been a subject of debate within the civic body since 2020. Earlier in 2020, the Shiv Sena UBT-led standing committee had approved a concession of nearly Rs 10 crore for the hotel for the construction of the security infrastructure on public roads.

However, that waiver was later withdrawn last year. The withdrawal came after a BMC proposal in April 2025 was accepted by the state-appointed civic administrator and BMC chief in May 2025.
