BMC Directs Grant Road Officials to Promote Composting in Housing Societies

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed its civic officials to encourage residential housing societies across the city to adopt composting and other environmentally sustainable practices. The directive was issued on Saturday, June 27, 2026, during an official review visit to the D Ward office located in Grant Road, Mumbai, where senior administrators assessed ongoing civic operations.

During the visit to the Grant Road facility, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma-Lavangare highlighted the critical role that local citizens and housing societies play in urban waste management. She stated that while the BMC has been actively implementing a range of measures to improve waste processing systems throughout Mumbai, the active participation of residential housing societies is essential to promote and sustain long-term green initiatives.

The BMC's directive is designed to strengthen waste management directly at the source, which officials note is a key factor in improving city-wide waste processing. By shifting some of the processing responsibilities to the community level through composting, the civic body aims to build a more sustainable and efficient system for handling municipal solid waste.

Under the guidance of the D Ward administration and other civic officials, the BMC plans to engage with residential housing societies to help them implement these sustainable practices. The initiative seeks to foster a sense of community participation, which Verma-Lavangare indicated is vital for the long-term success of Mumbai's environmental and waste management programs.
