BMC Establishes Fire Safety Skill Development Centre in Powai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with the Fire & Security Association of India (FSAI), established the MCMCR-FSAI Skill Development Centre at the Municipal Capacity Building and Research Centre campus in Powai, Mumbai, on July 8, 2026. The newly opened facility aims to strengthen fire safety awareness and technical expertise across Maharashtra.
The centre is designed to serve a wide range of stakeholders, including urban local bodies, fire services personnel, architects, engineers, students, housing societies, commercial establishments, and local citizens.
A key feature of the skill development centre is its Live Experiential Learning Laboratory. This laboratory allows visitors to gain hands-on experience with modern fire safety and life protection systems. It houses working models of fire detection and suppression systems, passive fire protection measures, emergency evacuation systems, firefighting equipment, pumps, sensors, and other advanced safety technologies.
The laboratory is set to host live demonstrations, practical training sessions, and certification courses, while also supporting research and innovation in the field of fire safety.
According to an official, the training facility has been developed in line with the National Building Code (NBC) 2026 and the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. The official stated that the centre aims to strengthen the capabilities of fire services and urban local bodies through industry-focused courses and practical learning, helping to create a skilled workforce and more resilient cities.
Dr. Vipin Sharma, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs), highlighted the importance of the new facility for urban safety. He stated that the centre represents a major step towards strengthening urban fire safety preparedness and advancing skill-based training. He added that the facility will play a vital role in building technical expertise, improving emergency response capabilities, and creating safer urban communities.
