BMC Evacuates Families from Ashok Nagar in Ghatkopar West Following Deadly Landslide
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has begun evacuating families from the landslide-prone Ashok Nagar area in Ghatkopar West following an August 12 landslide. Civic officials confirmed that between 25 and 50 families have agreed to vacate their homes and move to safer locations.
To accommodate the displaced residents, the civic body has arranged temporary shelters at Mohili School in Sakinaka. Several families have already relocated and have been housed at the school facility.
However, civic officials noted that several other families have refused to leave despite repeated appeals and warnings about the risks associated with the unstable terrain. The civic body had previously installed warning boards in the area before the monsoon, cautioning residents against continuing to reside in the vulnerable zone.
Because the land on which the settlement stands belongs to the district collector and the Airports Authority of India, the BMC has also formally written to both authorities regarding the situation.
The evacuation drive was intensified after a landslide at Hill No. 3 in Ashok Nagar claimed eight lives and injured seven others. The incident prompted civic authorities to step up relocation efforts in vulnerable locations across the city. Mumbai currently has approximately 279 landslide-prone areas identified across its 26 administrative wards.
