BMC Files Case Against Seven Unauthorized Schools in Trombay and Mankhurd

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Education Department has filed a police complaint against the managements of seven unauthorized primary schools operating in the Trombay and Mankhurd localities of Mumbai. The legal action was initiated after the institutions continued their operations despite receiving repeated closure notices.

The complaint was lodged at the Trombay Police Station by Mohammad Irfan Shah, a 44-year-old Section Inspector in the Private Primary Schools Department of the BMC. The action stems from a civic survey conducted for the 2025-26 academic year, which identified 164 unauthorized primary schools operating across Mumbai. Among these, seven schools were found to be operating within the jurisdiction of the Trombay Police Station.

The seven institutions named in the police complaint are New Akash English School, Ekvira Vidyalaya English School, Abhinav English School, Universal English School, Peace Public School, Trombay Hindi School, and Queen Marriage English School. All seven schools are located in the Mankhurd and Trombay areas.

According to the complainant, the BMC Education Department had previously served formal notices to the principals and secretaries of the seven schools in February and March 2026. These notices were issued under the directions of the Directorate of Education, Maharashtra, and with official authorization from the Education Officer of the BMC.

The school managements were directed to either shut down their institutions immediately or submit valid government recognition documents within seven days of receiving the notices. However, the schools allegedly failed to provide any explanation, did not secure the required government approvals, and continued to run their classes in direct violation of the orders.

The case highlights an ongoing crackdown by municipal authorities against unauthorized educational facilities. With 164 such primary schools identified across Mumbai during the 2025-26 survey, the filing of this police complaint marks a major step toward enforcing state educational standards in the region.
