BMC Floats Rs 9.23 Crore Tender For Kala Ghoda Phase 2A Development Project
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday floated a Rs 9.23 crore tender for Phase 2A of the Kala Ghoda precinct development project in south Mumbai. The civic initiative will involve upgrading roads, footpaths, drainage networks, landscaping, and street lighting across the historic heritage precinct.
The upcoming phase of the project will focus on four specific thoroughfares in the Kala Ghoda area: Chamber of Commerce Lane, Forbes Street, Nagindas Master Road, and Nanik Motwani Road.
Local BJP corporator Makrand Narwekar noted that the current work expands on the previous upgrades completed in the precinct. The first phase of the project was inaugurated in July this year by the Maharashtra Chief Minister. During that initial phase, multiple roads across Kala Ghoda—specifically V B Gandhi Marg (Forbes Street), Ropewalk Lane, Saibaba Road, Rutherford Street, and B Bharucha Road—were renovated with redesigned streets, enhanced street lighting, open-air cafe seating, and landscaped public spaces.
Narwekar stated that the civic administration is now taking on additional roads in the second phase. He explained that discussions have already been held with the Mumbai Traffic Police to designate these stretches as pedestrian-only zones on weekends. Narwekar further mentioned that the next phase of the project will include the construction of robotic parking for vehicles at the Kala Ghoda junction, accompanied by a surrounding plaza.
According to the tender details, the planned road works will encompass a wide range of civic and structural improvements. These tasks include clearing the designated sites, removing temporary structures, and shifting or relocating essential utilities, street poles, traffic signals, and road signboards. The execution will also entail excavation and the construction of road layers.
Furthermore, the project will involve installing basalt and granite cobblestones, repairing and constructing chambers, and installing recessed chamber covers with ducts across the designated roads in the precinct.
