BMC Headquarters in Mumbai to Install 87 AI CCTV Cameras for Rs 3.74 Crore

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is upgrading the security infrastructure at its heritage headquarters in Mumbai with the planned installation of 87 artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV cameras. The project, valued at Rs 3.74 crore including taxes, aims to replace the existing surveillance system.

The civic body has selected Sahora Corporation to execute the project, which encompasses 41 AI dome cameras, 44 AI bullet cameras, and two Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras. The contract also includes a four-year post-installation maintenance provision costing an additional Rs 35.41 lakh. Once the Standing Committee grants formal approval, the cameras are scheduled for installation within nine months.

The upgraded system will incorporate facial recognition, real-time threat detection, automated alerts, and intelligent monitoring of visitors, staff, and officials across the headquarters building. A detailed layout for the camera placements was formulated following a survey of the heritage structure conducted in consultation with security personnel and officials from the civic body's Mechanical and Electrical Department.

A senior civic official stated that the strategic placement of cameras across the headquarters is intended to bolster security, prevent accidental or deliberate incidents, and foster responsible conduct among visitors and employees.

In addition to the surveillance overhaul, the BMC has proposed implementing a cloud-based Digital Meeting Management System to transition to paperless proceedings for its 237 corporators. The Rs 42.77-lakh platform will distribute General Body and committee agendas, meeting notices, minutes, and supporting documents directly to corporators' tablets and smartphones, replacing physical paperwork. Both the surveillance and paperless governance proposals have been tabled before the BMC Standing Committee.
