BMC Installs Rumbler Strips on Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover Extension After Truck Crash
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced the installation of rumbler strips on sharp turns along Mumbai’s Mrinal Tai Gore Flyover extension near Oshiwara, following an accident on Friday afternoon where a truck rammed into the bridge wall. The collision resulted in a portion of the elevated structure's sound barrier crashing down onto SV Road near the Oshiwara market area.
The accident took place on Friday afternoon when a heavy truck collided with the wall of the flyover extension. The impact dislodged a section of the sound barrier, causing it to fall directly onto the busy SV Road below, close to Oshiwara market. The mishap raised fresh safety concerns regarding traffic movement and bridge infrastructure on the stretch.
In the wake of the collision, the civic body identified four critical spots on the flyover extension that feature sharp turns and slopes. Civic teams have already set up 15 mm-thick rumblers at two of these designated locations to slow down approaching traffic and prevent accidents, with work scheduled to install rumbler strips at the other two locations as well.
Explaining the measures, a civic official noted that authorities had earlier applied aggregates on the mastic surface of the flyover to ensure it was non-slippery, though that intervention faced criticism. Following the Friday crash, the administration decided to install the 15 mm-thick rumbler strips across the identified slopes and turns.
The civic official confirmed that additional safety infrastructure is also being put in place, including cautionary signboards and speed-limit boards across the corridor. Alongside these traffic-calming measures, the municipal administration will carry out structural repairs on the damaged sound barriers on the flyover.
Citizens and local community members had previously expressed serious concern over recurrent accidents involving heavy vehicles on the flyover extension. Dhaval Shah of the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association noted that while the civic body has placed rumblers on the downward slope on the east-to-west section, skidding continues to be an unresolved issue across many other sections of the flyover extension.
