BMC issued 160 warnings in Kurla before landslide killed 7

A hillside collapse at Gaushiya Chawl in Teen Number Khadi, Kurla West, killed seven people—including three children—and injured seven others on Wednesday at around 3:48 am. The fatal collapse occurred in a location where civic authorities had previously issued around 160 warning notices to residents regarding high landslide risks.

According to a senior civic official, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had issued the notices to residents of Khadi No 3 to warn them that they were living in a high-risk area prone to landslides. The official notices explicitly advised residents to vacate their vulnerable homes prior to the disaster.

The warnings served in Khadi No 3 were part of a broader effort across the L ward, where civic officials had issued approximately 500 notices in total to residents living in vulnerable locations.

On Wednesday morning, a portion of the hillside gave way and collapsed directly onto homes in Gaushiya Chawl. Rescue personnel worked through the rubble at the Kurla West site to assist victims and retrieve those caught in the debris.
