BMC Issues Show-Cause Notice to NSCI Worli Over Non-Sporting Events
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued a fresh show-cause notice to the National Sports Club of India in Worli, warning that its lease over a prime civic plot could be cancelled for allegedly violating lease terms by hosting non-sporting events without permission.
The notice was issued on August 17 by BMC Joint Municipal Commissioner (Improvements) Sanjog Kabre. It states that the club conducted a large number of non-sporting programmes at its stadium and halls without obtaining prior clearance from the municipal commissioner, as mandated under the agreement.
The land, situated at Plot Number 11, CS Number 4/47 (Part) in Worli, was allotted to NSCI under a lease deed dated May 11, 1993. Under Condition 15 of the deed, if the stadium premises are proposed to be used for activities other than sports, the club is required to obtain advance permission from the municipal commissioner and pay the applicable premium.
According to the show-cause notice, NSCI had submitted details regarding 207 programmes held at the venue between 2020 and 2025. Upon review, the BMC found that 194 of those programmes—accounting for 93.71 percent of the total—were non-sporting events organized without securing the mandatory prior approvals.
The civic body has directed NSCI to submit a documentary explanation within 15 days from the date the notice was issued. The administration cautioned that if the club fails to provide a satisfactory response within the stipulated timeframe, further legal action will be initiated on the merits of the case, which may include the termination of the land lease.
