BMC Launches Gen Z Fellowship Programme for 50 Young Professionals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has launched the 'Gen Z Fellowship Programme' to induct 50 young professionals into civic administration for a 12-month tenure at a monthly stipend of Rs 61,500 in Mumbai.

Modelled on the Maharashtra government's Chief Minister Fellowship Programme, the initiative aims to provide participants with direct exposure to urban governance, policymaking, and project planning while working alongside senior civic officials. The fellows will be appointed on a contractual basis and will not be regular civic employees.

Selected candidates will be assigned to work with the municipal commissioner, additional commissioners, the mayor, the standing committee chairman, and heads of various municipal departments. Their responsibilities will include policy implementation, data analysis, administrative coordination, report preparation, and monitoring civic initiatives.

Graduates under 28 years of age who are proficient in Marathi, Hindi, and English and possess basic computer skills are eligible to apply. The civic body opened the online application window on August 19, 2026, and submissions will be accepted through August 31, 2026.

Reacting to the announcement, Godfrey Pimenta, founder of the Watchdog Foundation, welcomed the initiative but stated that 50 positions were insufficient for Mumbai's population across 25 administrative wards. He suggested allocating 10 fellows per ward, creating 250 positions to enable deeper ward-level research and better identification of local civic issues.
