BMC Mandates Lightweight Materials for Beautification After Sion Gazebo Collapse

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed officials to use lightweight materials for all future beautification projects in public spaces, following a gazebo collapse at Mala Garden in Pratiksha Nagar, Sion, that left at least three people injured.
The civic body issued the directive after a preliminary assessment into the incident. According to Avinash Dhakne, Additional Municipal Commissioner in charge of disaster management, the cement-roofed gazebo itself appeared intact prior to the incident, but vibrations caused by other work being carried out nearby may have triggered the collapse. The heavy weight of the structure then resulted in injuries to the people beneath it.
Following the collapse, the civic administration is also expanding its safety checks across the city. The inspections will cover vulnerable slopes, coaching classes, and eateries to prevent further structural mishaps in public and commercial spaces.
