BMC Orders Action Against Employees Skipping Electoral Roll Revision Duty in Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed that strict action be initiated against officers and employees in Mumbai who failed to report for their Special Intensive Revision (SIR) duty for electoral rolls. Prajakta Verma-Lavangare, who serves as the BMC additional municipal commissioner and additional district election officer, issued these directives during an administrative review meeting on Wednesday.

The mandate to penalize errant officials comes in the wake of several booth-level officers (BLOs), including school teachers and BMC employees, failing to report for their assigned SIR work on Tuesday, which was the first day of the revision programme.

To prevent further disruption to the process, Verma-Lavangare instructed assistant commissioners and zonal deputy commissioners of the BMC, along with the concerned electoral registration officers, to coordinate closely with one another. This multi-level coordination is intended to ensure that the electoral rolls revision programme is completed smoothly and on time within the district.

Under the SIR programme, booth-level officers are responsible for critical grassroots tasks. These duties include collecting enumeration forms, distributing them to every single household in their assigned local areas, ensuring that the forms are filled out correctly, and uploading the collected details online to update the official electoral system.

Addressing the review meeting on Wednesday, which focused specifically on the functioning of assistant electoral registration officers, Verma-Lavangare spoke about the dual responsibilities currently facing the administration. She acknowledged that while BMC officers and employees have significant responsibilities related to the ongoing monsoon season, the SIR programme is of equal importance.

She emphasized that officers must ensure both sets of duties are met, and that immediate action must be taken against those who fail to report. The move is intended to enforce strict accountability among government employees to ensure the smooth and timely completion of the electoral rolls revision programme.
