BMC Plans Shared Wet Waste Processing Sites for Space-Constrained Bulk Generators

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has invited expressions of interest from third-party agencies to assist bulk waste generators across Mumbai in setting up and operating decentralised, on-site wet waste processing systems.

As part of the plan, the civic body is preparing to allow establishments and residential societies that lack adequate space for in-situ waste processing to form tie-ups with nearby properties. Entities without sufficient land will be permitted to partner with neighbouring housing societies or establishments that have the required space to operate shared processing sites.

The measure targets designated bulk waste generators, which include housing societies, hospitals, and commercial establishments. To support the implementation and establishment of these decentralised systems, the civic body is offering an incentive of up to a 15 percent property tax rebate.

Data from the municipal corporation shows that 3,177 bulk waste generators have been identified across Mumbai so far. Among these, 2,025 bulk waste generators are officially registered with the civic body.

The selected third-party agencies will assist these entities in setting up and managing the decentralised processing infrastructure, addressing spatial limitations while expanding local waste processing coverage.
