BMC Repairs Mumbai-III Water Pipeline Leak at Teen Hath Naka in Thane
Civic engineers and municipal staff completed repairs on a major leak in the 3,000-mm-diameter Mumbai-III water main near Teen Hath Naka in Thane at 5 pm on Saturday. The completion of the intensive operation enabled civic authorities to schedule the phased restoration of water supply across affected parts of Mumbai city and the eastern suburbs by Saturday evening.
The leakage in the critical transmission line was first detected on Thursday night. Immediately following the discovery, officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stepped in to install a wooden stopper to temporarily arrest the water flow. Civic teams then initiated excavation around the damaged section of the main and pumped out accumulated water to expose the pipeline and allow the surface to dry before carrying out permanent engineering work.
According to civic officials, the repair plan entailed reinforcing the compromised portion with a mild steel (MS) patch plate, designed to be welded securely directly onto the pipeline. However, the maintenance effort faced a setback on Saturday when a fresh leak developed on the pipeline. The high water pressure inside the massive 3,000-mm main posed significant technical challenges for the engineering crew and led to disruptions in water supply across several surrounding regions.
To manage the situation and facilitate safe repairs, the BMC coordinated operations with the Pise Pumping Station and the Panjarapur Water Treatment Plant. Operators at both facilities regulated the water flow and reduced the internal pressure within the network, creating manageable conditions for the repair crew to execute the required work safely.
Following the successful conclusion of the repair work at 5 pm, the civic body announced that the transmission pipeline would be gradually recharged and pressurised. Water supply was slated to resume in phases from 9 pm on Saturday, with full normalisation anticipated as the broader distribution network stabilised.
