BMC Restores South Mumbai Water Supply After Pise Barrage Repairs Cause 20 Percent Cut

A significant water supply disruption affected parts of South Mumbai on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, following technical issues that impacted the city's pumping operations. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the water supply was reduced by nearly 20 percent in the affected areas of the Island City. The civic body expected the supply to improve by 7:00 PM on Wednesday as operations were restored in a phased manner.

The disruption began on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, when water levels at the Pise barrage experienced a rapid decline. According to the BMC, this sudden drop in water levels was caused by a combination of urgent maintenance work and irregular water release from the Bhatsa Dam.

The urgent work involved technical repairs on the pneumatic gates installed at the Pise barrage. While these repairs were being carried out, the irregular discharge of water from the Bhatsa Dam further compounded the issue, leading to the swift decrease in the barrage's water levels on Tuesday.

Because of the low water levels and the ongoing repair work, the municipal corporation's pumping operations were disrupted. This disruption directly translated to a reduction in the volume of water supplied to various parts of South Mumbai, resulting in the nearly 20 percent cut.

To resolve the issue, the BMC initiated phased restoration work on the pumping systems. Civic officials worked through Wednesday to stabilize the water levels and complete the necessary repairs. The BMC announced that the water supply in the affected South Mumbai areas was on track to improve by 7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, as the pumping operations gradually returned to normal.

Residents in the affected areas of the Island City had to manage with the reduced supply throughout the day on Wednesday while the repair work was underway. The municipal corporation monitored the situation closely as the phased restoration of the pumping operations progressed toward the evening deadline.
