BMC Revives Mumbadevi Temple Precinct Facelift With Revised ₹88 Crore Plan

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on July 3, 2026, floated fresh tenders to revive the stalled redevelopment and beautification project of the historic Mumbadevi Temple precinct. The revised plan slashes the project budget and completely drops a controversial proposed 17-storey robotic parking tower that had stalled the project for nearly two years.
The civic body has reduced the project's budget from the originally planned ₹220 crore to ₹88 crore. The redesigned initiative aims to transform the 6,700-square-metre heritage area around the temple into a clean, safe, and pedestrian-friendly space.
The Mumbadevi Temple precinct facelift was first unveiled in 2024 to address chronic congestion around the shrine, which is dedicated to Mumbai's presiding deity. During festivals, the area experiences massive footfalls. A lack of basic amenities like seating, toilets, and resting areas has historically forced devotees onto the surrounding roads, creating significant safety hazards.
The original plan aimed to accommodate up to 7,000 devotees at a time by introducing walkways, seating areas, temple gardens, and other public conveniences. However, the project was shelved in July 2024 after local opposition erupted over a proposed 17-storey robotic parking tower designed to hold 546 vehicles.
By removing the contentious parking tower from the plan, the BMC has revived the project. The new tender covers three civic-owned plots surrounding the temple. Planned upgrades include stone paving, landscaping, decorative lighting, CCTV surveillance, and signage.
Devotees will also gain access to upgraded public amenities, including pathways, seating, toilets, drinking water facilities, a first-aid room, and a nursing room.
According to a civic official, the selected contractor will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the developed area for five years after the completion of the work. The project is expected to enhance the cultural and heritage significance of the precinct while improving the overall experience for visitors.
