BMC road concreting drive halves Mumbai pothole complaints

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that its ongoing road concreting drive has halved genuine pothole complaints across Mumbai during the monsoon season in July 2026, even as local issues like a pothole on Mount Mary Road near Mannat in Bandra on July 7 continue to draw attention. The civic administration revealed that the transition to concrete road surfaces is expected to lower overall road repair costs by 45 per cent.

According to data released by the BMC, the civic body received a total of 2,114 complaints regarding potholes during the current monsoon season. However, upon verification, officials found that only half of these reports were valid. Specifically, 1,057 of the received complaints did not actually pertain to potholes.

The BMC also reported that a total of 323 pothole complaints remained pending as of Wednesday.

The current figures represent a notable decrease in road damage complaints compared to the previous year. In July of last year, the BMC registered a total of 3,625 pothole complaints across Mumbai. Civic officials attribute the reduction to the ongoing large-scale conversion of asphalt roads into concrete roads, which are more resilient to heavy rains.

In addition to reducing road damage, the concreting drive is projected to bring major financial relief to the municipal budget. The BMC expects its total pothole repair expenditure to fall by 45 per cent this year. This projected cost reduction is directly attributed to the durability of the newly converted concrete roads compared to traditional asphalt surfaces.
