BMC Rolls Out Online Transfer System for Engineers Across Mumbai

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced an online system to manage transfers, promotions, and postings across its engineering cadre in Mumbai. Under the new arrangement, eligible junior engineers, sub-engineers, and assistant engineers can submit their posting preferences through an online application between September 5 and September 20.

According to the civic administration, the computerized system has been implemented to bring transparency to the administrative process. Postings will be determined by taking into consideration administrative requirements, existing vacant posts, submitted request applications, and formal recommendations received by the civic body.

The initiative specifically applies to junior engineers, sub-engineers, and assistant engineers who have served in the same department for three years or more. These employees will be required to lodge their transfer preferences digitally through the newly established system. The platform will operate on an online randomization format, permitting each applicant to submit a minimum of one and a maximum of five location preferences.

The administrative reform comes against the backdrop of an earlier cash-for-transfer controversy that involved 163 civic engineers. Those disputed transfers were subsequently stayed and cancelled by authorities following the allegations.

In response to that controversy, the BMC constituted a committee headed by the director of engineering services and projects to conduct periodic transfers within the engineering cadre. That committee later oversaw and carried out the transfers of 169 engineers before the civic body transitioned the entire posting process to the new digital, randomization-based framework.
