BMC Scraps Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan, Launches Revamped Sanitation Scheme

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has scrapped the 'Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan' sanitation scheme and replaced it with the 'Brihanmumbai Swachhta Seva Yojana' following a group leaders' meeting at the BMC headquarters on Tuesday evening.

The original initiative was launched in 2012 during the tenure of the undivided Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. The decision to restructure the civic cleanliness program brings several operational and financial changes to local waste management.

Under the revamped scheme, a total of 980 agencies will be tasked with door-to-door garbage collection and drain cleaning operations.

The proposal also includes a revision in pay for civic sanitation workers. The monthly honorarium for sanitation staff is proposed to increase from Rs 6,000 to Rs 11,000.

In addition to worker compensation changes, an official stated that the monthly user fee charged to households for garbage collection is likely to be doubled from its current rate of Rs 20 per month.
